David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Karen Blixen & Giraffe Centre

AASEXC-1: David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Karen Blixen & Giraffe Centre

Departure at 9.0am

A tour to experience conservation efforts on endangered species and past history of the city

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Centre was established in honour of David Sheldrick who was an anti-poaching warden of Tsavo National Park. Together with his wife Daphne they had pioneered ways of raising orphaned black rhinos and elephants and then reintroducing them back into the wild which is still done and the animals can be viewed every day between 11am and noon. The site is located inside the Nairobi National Park off Magadi Road.

We have lunch at a food court or restaurant. After lunch we follow the footsteps of Baroness Karen Blixen Finecke, a Danish woman and author of Out of Africa who lived in this farmhouse between 1914 and 1931 and who abandoned the place due to personal problems. At independence Denmark gave the house to the Kenya Government as a gift in her memory. Stretching out beyond Karen Blixen is the beautiful Ngong Hills.

We then visit Giraffe centre which is run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW). This is a very important breeding centre started by Jock Leslie- Melville and his wife that produces breeds the endangered Rothschild giraffe for introduction into Kenyan national parks. Visit the Giraffe Centre for tea, and a chance to feed the famous Rothschild giraffes. The experience is up close and interesting!

We then drop you off at your hotel.
