KENYA'S TENTED AMBOSELI & MARA (PRIVATE OVERLAND)
- Places to visit:
Overview
A relatively short safari, this 6-day itinerary is ideal for travellers pressed for time or as an opening chapter to a safari-and-beach holiday combination; it is easy to add on a seamless transition to Diani Beach, Zanzibar or even the idyllic Seychelles.
Beginning with an overland transfer from Nairobi, your tour includes two nights at a private reserve bordering Amboseli National Park and two in the Masai Mara National Reserve, punctuated by a night at a safari lodge in the Nairobi National Park.
Ā
The tour opens with Amboseli, home to the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro ā the worldās tallest free-standing mountain ā as well as a wide range of heavyweight animals to begin your safari, including elephants, buffalo and lion. The parkās extensive wetlands make for interesting game viewing and bird watching, and you have a chance to visit a traditional Maasai village.
Ā
Your guide then takes you back to Nairobi where you keep the safari theme by checking in for a night at Nairobi Tented Camp, located in Nairobi National Park. This is the place to photograph towering giraffes with the city skyline in the far distance!
Ā
Then it is on to Kenyaās wildlife showpiece ā the Masai Mara ā and you can sit back on a scheduled flight and watch the Rift Valley below you as you fly straight in. You enjoy two nights at Porini Mara Camp, exploring the Masai Mara and private conservancies where you are guaranteed excellent and exclusive game viewing. The wild drama of the seasonal Wildebeest Migration takes centre stage but such is the abundance of resident wildlife that this region delivers great sightings all year round and is especially good for large predators. A flight back to Nairobi after a morning walk with Maasai warriors rounds off a packed and exciting six days in Africa.
Itinerary
Day 1: Karibu Kenya | 2 Nights
On arrival at Nairobiās Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your guide will meet you and whisk you to your vehicle for the drive to Amboseli National Park.
Ā
As you drive through the changing landscape of villages and farms, your surroundings gradually become more open and rugged, and the bulk of Mount Kilimanjaro looms into view. Drawing closer, you enter the Selenkay Conservancy bordering Amboseli, and shortly thereafter arrive at Porini Amboseli Camp. Enjoy a delicious lunch in the shade of a spreading Tortilis tree, and then settle into your spacious canvas suite. As the afternoon begins to cool down, you wander over to the mess tent for high tea before departing on your game drive.
Heading into the Selenkay Conservancy, you seek out a multitude of big game in the enigmatic light of an equatorial afternoon. Red dust billows around a herd of buffalo on the move, the sunlight creating an intriguing interplay of shadow and colour.
Ā
As the sun dips on to the horizon, your guide selects a scenic spot alongside a waterhole where you can stretch your legs, and produces a hamper crammed with ice cold drinks and snacks. As the sky changes colour and the landscape before takes on shadowy hues of purples and golds, you raise your glass in a salute to the glorious African sunset.
Ā
As the stars begin to appear in the great arching dome of sky above, you make your way back to camp while your guide deftly wields a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals as they emerge into the darkness. A hyena looks at the vehicle curiously, eyes glowing in the light, before silently melting back into the night. Genets leap acrobatically through the trees, bush babies peer at you with enormous eyes, and porcupines shuffle through the undergrowth.
Ā
Back at the camp, you share stories of your adventures in the warm glow of the fire before sitting at the table bathed in candle light for a sumptuous meal below the stars.
Accommodation: Porini Amboseli Camp
Day 2: Into Amboseli
A freshly brewed hot drink delivered to your door awakes you from your slumber, and you quickly find yourself enjoying the breakfast buffet in the cool dawn air. Setting off in the safari vehicle with your guide, you drive into Amboseli National Park.
Ā
Famed for its population of enormously tusked elephants, this is the place to capture iconic images of Africau2019s largest land mammal, with Kilimanjaro, Africaās largest free-standing mountain as a compelling backdrop.
Ā
Stopping in the shade of a tree at midday, you enjoy a delicious picnic lunch prepared by the lodge kitchen. Sipping on a chilled drink and nibbling on assorted delicacies, you find yourself lost in thought, gazing out the tremendous view of open plains dominated by the huge bulk of Kilimanjaro.
Ā
Continuing your game drive into the afternoon, you come across a herd of elephants lumbering out of the woodland towards the marsh. Marvelling at the soundless way in which they move, you watch as they march in single file along a path worn smooth by centuries of use. As they reach the water, you almost feel the sense of joy and relief as they wade in, splashing and rumbling quietly. The younger members of the herd cannot contain their excitement and rush in headlong, playfully shoving and splashing each other like exuberant children. After a few spellbinding minutes, at some unheard signal, the herd turns and moves back into the nearby forest, silent as ghosts.
Ā
Returning to the lodge in the dusky glow of sunset, you find a comfortable chair at the fireside to enjoy a chilled drink and mull over the experiences of the day before a sumptuous dinner is served in the dining room.
Accommodation: Akagera Lodge
Day 3: Selenkay To Nairobi National Park | 1 Nights
After breakfast, your guide takes you for a walk. Walking through the wilds of Africa is a wonderful experience, enhanced by your guide sharing his vast knowledge of the animals, pathways and plants that you encounter along the way. He will show you which herbs are medicinal, which roots are edible, the footprints of a variety of game, and tell you the secrets of a termite mound. The exhilaration of being on foot in the wilderness is a unique experience, where your senses become sharper and clearer, the air takes on a new aroma, and every step leads to new discoveries. Arriving at a Maasai village, or Manyatta, you visit the inhabitants and learn of their culture and pastoral way of life that has co-existed with the wilderness for centuries.
Ā
Returning to the lodge, you have lunch before departing on the drive to Nairobi Tented Camp in Nairobi National Park. This unique park has the distinction of being a stones throw from a bustling metropolis, yet populated by a great variety of big game. On your way to the camp, you have the opportunity to spot giraffes, buffalo and lions lurking in the shade.
Arriving at the camp, you enjoy a delicious cold drink below the spreading branches of a shady tree before settling into your canvas suite.
Ā
In the late afternoon, you venture out into the park for a game drive, where the chance of spotting a rare rhinoceros is a very real possibility, as well as having the unique opportunity to photograph African plains game with the skyscrapers of Nairobi in the background!
Ā
Returning to camp in the early evening, enjoy a scrumptious dinner by candle light before slipping off to bed, serenaded by the sounds of the African night outside.
Accommodation: Akagera Lodge
Day 4: The Magic Of The Mara | 2 Nights
Depart Nairobi Tented Camp after breakfast and drive to the airport, where a plane waits to wing you to the fabled Masai Mara. Your guide meets you and takes you for a game drive through the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, a private concession bordering the Mara, and soon you arrive at Porini Mara Camp. This stylish tented camp is perched on the bank of the Laetoli River, where thirsty animals often come to drink. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace, then discover your suite to settle in.
Ā
In the late afternoon, you set off for your game drive into the conservancy. During the Great Migration between July and September, in excess of a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles pass through this area, driven by an instinct as old as time to seek out water and fresh pastures.
Ā
Outside of the migration period, however, plenty remains to be seen. Resident animals include the Big 5, and wildlife encounters of a first-class nature abound.
Ā
Driving through this wondrous landscape of grassy plains dotted with flat-topped acacia trees that stand like lone sentinels, you feel the immensity of the space that surrounds you.
Ā
Under the spell of the endless plains, you watch the herds on the move, find the lurking predators, wonder at the silent passage of a multitude of elephants. As the sun dips toward the horizon, your guide selects a scenic spot to stretch your legs, and a sundowner hamper appears. You stand gazing at an unending vista, cocktail in hand while the sun paints the sky in otherworldly colours, marvelling at the wildness and beauty of the moment.
Accommodation: Kigali Serena Lodge
Day 5: Into The Mara
An early start sees you heading into the Masai Mara Reserve itself. As the rising sun brings the world into sharp relief, you roll across the undulating plains dotted everywhere with grazing antelope.
Ā
Your guide unlocks the secrets of this fascinating world for you, how the interconnecting web of life fits together, who depends on whom, and where the animals are to be found. Selecting a tree on the horizon as a destination, he drives you to where you discover a picnic table set in its shade, a mouth-watering selection of dishes laid out for your enjoyment. As you take in this spectacular scene, sip on a chilled drink and indulge the appetite you have worked up in the morningās excitement. Afterwards, relax in the shade as you daydream in the gentle breeze. Feeling refreshed, you then continue the adventure, letting nature dictate your pace as the afternoon wears on.
Ā
Exiting the reserve, you drive into the Ol Kinyei Conservancy for a sundowner stop followed by a night drive. As your guide deftly wields his spotlight, you watch the beam intently, looking for the tell-tale reflection from the eyes of nocturnal creatures as they emerge into the night.

Day 6: Homeward Bound
After you final morning game drive, you bid Porini Mara farewell and depart for the airstrip. As you fly back to Nairobi, you gaze out the window at the endless and primal landscape below. Reminiscing on the adventures of the previous days, you recall the magical moments you have had- the sight of Kilimanjaro framing a herd of elephants, the warm hearts of the people you have met, the sunset over the Masai Maraās plains. My travel companion had a preexisting medical condition and the team went above and beyond in making sure she was comfortable and looked afterAndrew M2024-02-19A fantastically memorable safari in Kenya We enjoyed a fantastic 5-day safari to Lake Naivasha, Nakuru and Masai Mara organised for us by Vera at Aardwolf. Everything about the planning and the trip was perfect. Vera really got the brief right and even took the trouble to meet us on the Sunday before to answer questions. Our guide, Evans, was super friendly and knowledgable. The accommodation lodges were better than we were expecting and most importantly, we saw a staggering variety of wildlife. Trip of a lifetime. I really recommend Aardwolf. It's worth noting that they are a member of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO). Also, their prices were very competitive.Fernando2023-07-02Full service from back to end Everything organized and smooth. From inquiry to booking to the actual trip, Aardwolf Africa delivered everything we hoped for and more. Vera was always very responsive and proposed the best and most unique accomodation - we recommend especially the Basecamp Adventure camp in Maasai Mara for a simple but stylish and very personal experience. If you like small camps in the midst of nature, great food and care about sustainability and empowering the local Maasai community, this one is for you! Our driver guide Wilson was incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we not only experienced the highlights of each park we visited on our 6 day/5 night trip to Samburu, Nakuru and Maasai Mara but also added in unique experiences off the beaten tourist track. Thank you so much Aardwolf Africa and Wilson for an authentic Kenyan adventure!Alexey K2018-10-02This company cares! We had safari with Aardwolf in Masai Mara 29 September - 2 October. When I was choosing among different companies for safari I noticed that Aardwolf has less reviews than some other companies, so I was hesitant about booking with Aardwolf. But when I firstly came into contact with Verah it was excellent communication. All questions answered professional and she was the only manager among those whom I've contacted, who wasn't trying to fit me in template schedule but was eager to help us choose the best options for us. Also what I like about her - she remembers everything you say: I've asked for binoculars, and she offered to give me one for free and didn't forget that. I've ordered food "no spicy" and didn't had to mention it any more - everyone along my route was notified about my food preferences. Excellent work for a manager! Now about our guide. Julius is fantastic guide! I had a lot of trips in my life - Amazon, Galapagoss, Indonesia, and he is surely one of the best. In 3 days we have seen everything: leopard - twice! Cheetah - twice! Lions - three times. Hunting lion - also done! Of course a lot of giraffes, antelopes, zebras. More important - he loves his job and cares about environment and people around. I will remember when he just suddenly stopped our car in the savanna where many cars passed before just to pick up a can thrown by somebody. It makes difference! Also he has a lot to tell about wildlife. Very good man, excellent guide and experienced driver. We definitely recommend Aardwolf, Verah and Julius for everybody doing safari! Alex & Natalia from Russia168inna2018-09-23Incredible trip to Kenya and Tanzania Excellent. Ordered a tour from Aardwolf on Kenya and Tanzania. Everything was organized well, on point and was very interesting. The safari turned very saturated, the hotels were good, the food was well cooked but the breakfasts were a bit poor. Kenya fascinated us with a lot of fabulous animals, we were in Ambosseli national park, Masai Mara and lake Bogoria. For those who want to see thousands of flamingos then they need to visit lake bogoria. A huge thank you to the company for our tour guide Julius, he is a very good guide and driver, he helped us a lot, he told us about a lot of things in Kenya. Overall he is a 5 star guide. If going to a safari in Kenya I would suggest going only with Julius because he is the best. The second part of our thrips was Tanzania, but there we had Aarwolfs suppliers organize our tour. The tour in Tanzania was also marvelous, definitely need to visit the volcano crater Ngorongoro. The lodges and hotels in Tanzania were a level higher than in Kenya which was very pleasing. The only bad thing is that the Tanzanian guide who turned out to be just a driver who wouldnĆ¢ĀĀt tell you anything unless you asked had weakens our impressions a bit because he didnĆ¢ĀĀt really tell us anything and just turned out to be driver. The prices that the company provided us was cheaper compared to other companies, but they were incredibly amazing.Thank you very much to Aarwolf for providing us with an amazing tour in Kenya and Tanzania and a seperate thank you to Julius for being an amazing tour guide.DLC2018-08-29Perfect! We booked our safaris to Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha, AMboseli and Tsavo East with Aardwolf Africa and everything was perfect. We went in august 2018 during 10 days and even during the pick season we had good rates. Thanks to Verah and our great guides Julius and Jackson we had an amazing trip. Logistics were perfecly organized, the lodges were very nice (clean, good food, very nice people), the cars were in perfect conditions to go everywhere in the reserves. We totally recommend Aardwolf Africa for your trips to Kenya! Thank you again! DMahtab I2018-07-29Ensured we were comfortable We booked our honeymoon to Kenya in July 2018 through Aardwolf Africa, and I have no complaints ! Thank you to Verah and our great guide Julius.
