This phenomenon activity happens every year where around 1.5 million wildebeest followed by many other antelopes like 400 000 zebra, 18 000 elands and 200 000 Thompson’s gazelle move in large herds.
This stunning annual movement is not very old since 1916 the migration process has started. Since then each year after the rainy season from April or May the large herds start moving from Serengeti’s plain towards the Masai Mara in Kenya.
This large movement is an important part of the eco-system that offers to witness the full life-cycle of the animals.
If you are looking for spotting this phenomenon movement the best way to track the moving herds is from Dec to May in the plains of Serengeti and Ngorongoro. This is generally the calving season and the best time to witness the newborn babies as well as the hunting game by predators.
During April- May these herds move towards the western corridor of Serengeti in search of grazing field. June to July the herds are spotted on the western side of Serengeti and near Grumeti River and can witness the most difficult part of their journey- the river crossing.
Crossing the Mara River in August the large herd’s movement is spotted in Kenya’s Masai Mara region is from September – November.
